This monumental work which Richard Wagner saw as “the ultimate symphony” marks a decisive change in this musical style and is considered a masterpiece of Western music, both as one of its greatest symphonies and as one of the greatest musical composition of all time.

 

Completed in February 1824.

First performed in Vienna on 7th May 1824 with Michael Umlauf conducting and the violinist Ignaz Schuppanzigh.

A performance on 1820s Classical instruments, with Les Siècles, conducted by François-Xavier Roth.
