Grande Midnight Mass

Messe de minuit de Charpentier

Thursday 5th December 2019 - 8.30 - Eglise de Marcq-en-Baroeul

Charpentier’s Midnight Mass for Christmas forms part of the Parody Mass tradition dating from the beginning of the 16thcentury, in which popular Christmas tunes were used to compose the various movements making up the Proper of the Mass. Charpentier’s mass is therefore redolent of a wide range of colours and emotions.

This short work is interspersed with four Christmas carols telling the story of the Nativity.
