Charpentier’s Midnight Mass for Christmas forms part of the Parody Mass tradition dating from the beginning of the 16^thcentury, in which popular Christmas tunes were used to compose the various movements making up the Proper of the Mass. Charpentier’s mass is therefore redolent of a wide range of colours and emotions.

This short work is interspersed with four Christmas carols telling the story of the Nativity.
