Lamento with Rocío Márquez

The Aedes ensemble’s guest for this programme is the famous flamenco cantaora Rocío Márquez. Together they explore our most intimate emotions.

Looking beyond the lamento form, the Ensemble Aedes embodies the power and depth singing can express. Based around Xenakis’ Night and Monteverdi’s Lamento della Ninfa, the programme juxtaposes choral singing with flamenco, in order to illustrate the torments of the human soul, the cruelty of mourning, the passion of love and the consolation of prayer. The flamenco songs, many taken from Rocío Márquez’ own repertoire, have been arranged to include choral voices, in counterpoint to the baroque and contemporary a cappella works we have chosen.

The two worlds are finally drawn together in a work for double choir and flamenco singer by Fabien Touchard.
